The rising infection figures in the current Corona wave have led to the Corona Commission reclassifying Austria as yellow again. Thus, medium risk again applies to all of Austria.
Burgenland, Lower Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg, and Vienna are now also rated medium risk. The provinces of Carinthia, Upper Austria, and Styria remain green-yellow, so there is a low risk for them.
Omicron variants BA.4/BA.5 are dominant
In this week’s assessment, the Corona Commission found an increased risk in most provinces. The more infectious omicron variants BA.4/BA.5 are already dominant. “Therefore, it can be assumed that the dynamics in the infectious event will continue to accelerate,” the experts expect. That was reflected in the consortium’s forecast this week.
Corona commission expects more hospital patients
The commission also pointed out that, according to that forecast, over the next two weeks, the level of exposure in normal wards will increase to a utilization level of 4.7 percent, exceeding the threshold for medium system risk. In the critical care area, forecasts also indicate that a substantial increase in utilization to 4.5 percent can be expected.
Both genomic and PCR-based variant surveillance currently suggests a nationwide dominance of the Omikron BA.4/BA.5 virus variants. Therefore, it can be assumed that the dynamics in the infection event will continue to accelerate.
It should be noted that the risk count has been compiled differently for the past two weeks, making it more challenging to slip into less favorable color zones. This mainly involves an omicron discount and the fact that low test numbers or associated higher positive rates no longer influence the coloring.
